Food is any substance we eat or consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism. Food is usually of plant, animal, or fungal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism’s cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.
You are what you eat because your health and your very existence depend on what you eat.
It is common in Ghana to buy waakye, awusa koko, rice and stews, bofrot, fried plantain, kenkey, and other foods and get it packaged in a transparent polythene bag. Most times, these foods are extremely very hot when we buy them.
In our home, residentially, we now store our banku in banku rubbers and we store the banku in the banku rubber right from the cooking bowl when it is boiling hot.
The main subject core of this article is to let you know the dangers of what we are unknowingly doing by storing high-temperature foods substances in these transparent polythene bags for convenience sake.
The white transparent polythene bag is originally NOT produced to carry hot foods because it contains two deadly chemicals called bisphenol A and phthalates which cause brain and liver damage, including other damage to other vital part of the body system.
These two chemicals when exposed to high temperatures react by injecting themselves into the heated environment.
This means that, for example, when you wrap hot banku into banku rubber, these deadly chemicals immediately begin to inject themselves into the banku. This ends up poisoning the banku…and the banku now becomes highly poisonous…but you dont know.
The same thing happens to waakye, awusa koko, bofrot, fried plantain, and in fact, any other food that is very hot.
These days, I have also noticed that some kenkey sellers in Ghana wrapped the kenkey in these polythene bags before cooking them, a process I find very dangerous and scaring, looking at the contamination that enters the kenkey before it is sold.
Plastics are not natural materials, they are man-made and synthetic, and their manufacturing process involves a cocktail of harmful chemicals. In particular, bisphenol A and phthalates are two of the main offenders in plastic food storage bags. These nasty chemicals can sneak into the stored food and contaminate it,if exposed to high temperature.
How do bisphenol A and phthalates affect the human body?
Now, these are the following damages these chemicals cause when they successfully find themselves inside your body through hot food.
damage the liver,
damage the lungs,
damage the reproductive system
increases blood pressure
causes type 2 diabetes
causes cardiovascular disease
Affects children behavior
Exposure to BPA is a concern because of the possible health effects on the brain and prostate gland of fetuses, infants, and children. It can also affect children’s behavior. Additional research suggests a possible link between BPA and increased blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
It is very pathetic.
Maybe you don’t drink alcohol because you know alcohol will damage your kidney and liver so you pity others who drink alcohol.
But then, the banku you eat every day at home, that is wrapped in polythene bags while it was still very hot, got contaminated by bisphenol A and phthalates.
As a result, you will also end up getting your kidney and liver damaged, so what’s the difference between you and the man whom you claim drinks too much alcohol ?...
Why hot food items should not be packed in polythene bags?
When hot food is packed in plastic, chemical exchange between plastic and food is maximized by high temperature and the nature of the food. Certain plastic bags may cause chemical filtration into the food.Toxins could migrate from the plastic to the substances they hold.
Heating plastics in the microwave may cause chemicals to leach into your foods. … Some of these chemicals have been linked to health problems such as metabolic disorders (including obesity) and reduced fertility. This leaching can occur even faster and to a greater degree when plastic is exposed to heat.
Never reheat food in plastic container…
Reheating or cooking food in a plastic container (even if it is marked microwave safe), is not safe as the plastic upon heating release a certain kind of chemical which will further leach into the food changing it’s genetic.
Best way to store food in polythen bags…
Because the polythene is not produce to store hot food, the worst you can do,is to wait until the food has cooled down before wrapping it up with the polythene rubber bag.
Exclusively and residentally,in the cases of banku, kokonte, omo tuo and other local Ghanaian foods that we store in polythene rubber to enhance the validity of such foods in our homes, the best we can do is to allow the foods to completely cool down before wrapping them up.period.
